KNOWN LIMITATIONS After installing a new device in Windows ME, please reboot your system for the ports to become accessible. The Device Manager incorrectly reports bogus resources for each of the RealPort serial ports (see the Ports (COM & LPT) category of the Device Manager). This is a limitation of the operating system, which requires that serial ports are associated with a physical address space, albeit phantom. If you plan to use the RealPort driver with serial printers, you may want to reboot the system after device installation or after renaming ports to see the new ports listed in the Print Spooler's list of available ports. This is a known limitation of the Print Spooler, which does not detect changes in the list of available ports automatically. If you experience difficulties operating serial printers, try enabling the option, "Complete write requests immediately." A checkbox of the same name can be found in the port's Port Properties dialog in the Device Manager. 5. INSTALLING THE REALPORT DRIVER To install the driver, follow these steps: o Close the Device Manager if it is running. o Unzip the driver archive to a folder of your choice. o Run DIGIRPCL.BAT to remove any previous INF file versions. o Open Start > Settings > Control Panel. o Locate and run the control panel named "Add New Hardware". o Windows indicates that it will next search for new Plug and Play devices, which may take a few moments. Choose "Next >" to continue. o If Windows finds any new Plug and Play devices for which it has installation files, it will install them and will complete the Add New Hardware Wizard. If this happens, rerun the Add New Hardware Wizard. Otherwise, Windows may find some devices for which it doesn't have installation files and will list them now. o Tell Windows the device you want to install isn't listed by selecting the radio entitled, "No, the device isn't in the list." Choose "Next >" to continue. (This dialog does not appear in Windows Me.) o Windows allows you to search for non-Plug and Play compatible devices. Select instead the radio, "No, I want to select the hardware from a list," and choose "Next >". o Windows displays a list of hardware categories. Select "Other devices" and choose "Next >" to continue. o Windows will display a list of known hardware in the category previously selected. Don't select any device from the list. Instead, choose "Have Disk..." to point Windows to the location of the installation files. o Enter the path to the installation files. Choose "OK". o Windows now searches the indicated directory for installation files and displays a list of devices it can install. Find your device in the list, select it, and choose "Next >." o Choose "Finish" to continue the installation. o The RealPort driver will now ask for the device's I.P. address and TCP port. Enter this information and choose "OK" to complete the installation. You can change this information later via the Device Manager. 6. UPDATING THE REALPORT DRIVER To update the driver, follow these steps: o Close the Device Manager if it is running. o Unzip the driver archive to a folder of your choice. o Run DIGIRPCL.BAT to remove any previous INF file versions. o Next, open the Device Manager: - Open Start > Settings > Control Panel. - Run the control panel named "System". - Click the "Device Manager" tab. o Find and open the "Multi-port serial adapters" category. o Display the properties dialog for the device you would like to update. o Click the "Driver" tab. o Choose "Update Driver..." to run the Update Device Driver Wizard. o Choose "Next >". o The default radio button should be selected, "Search for a better driver than the one your device is using now." Choose "Next >". o Deselect all radio buttons. o Select the radio button entitled, "Specify a location:". o Enter the path to the updated driver files (the directory to which you unpacked the archive) or click "Browse..." to graphically search for and select the directory. o Choose "Next >" after you have entered the directory path. o The Update Device Driver Wizard now suggests a driver to install, albeit the wrong driver. Select instead the radio button entitled, "One of the other drivers." o Choose "View List..." to display the list of other drivers. o Choose the proper device description from the list (the description should match the description of the device being updated). Choose "OK". o Choose "Next >". o Choose "Next >". o The driver will prompt for the I.P. address and TCP port of the device. The values previously used by the device should already be entered by default. Choose "OK" to continue. o Choose "Finish" to complete the update. 7. ADDITIONAL NOTES On-line help is available after installing the product. Additional documentation can be found at Digi's Web site, http://www.digi.com, or at Digi's FTP server, ftp://ftp.digi.com.
